New Blood: Pittsburgh Steelers Sign Former Kansas City Chiefs Tight End Izaiah Gathings to One-Year Deal

Former Chiefs Tight End Signs One-Year Contract with Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced on Wednesday that they have signed former Kansas City Chiefs tight end Izaiah Gathings to a one-year contract after a tryout. Gathings, who played college football at Middle Tennessee, transitioned from a wide receiver to a tight end during his time with the Chiefs. Although he had minimal impact while with the team, recording only one reception during the preseason.

With the addition of Gathings, the Steelers now have a more crowded tight end depth chart. Alongside Gathings, the team already has Pat Freiermuth, Connor Heyward, Darnell Washington, Rodney Williams, and MyCole Pruitt on the roster. It is expected that the team will only keep three tight ends for the upcoming season.

During OTAs, the Steelers are currently evaluating all players on their roster as they prepare for the upcoming season under new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. The tight end position is anticipated to play a more significant role in the offense this year. However, wide receiver and cornerback remain as some of the team’s biggest question marks possibly leading to roster moves in the near future. Stay tuned for updates on the Steelers roster as the offseason progresses.
