New Councilmen Sworn In, Runoff Election Ordered and Controversial Zoning Request Debated in City Council Meeting

Dayton takes care of election matters, postpones discussion on zoning problem

On Monday night, the council convened to discuss the results of the May 6 election and other related matters. After reviewing and approving the election results, newly elected Position 1 Councilman Harry Barnes, Jr. and incumbent Position 3 Councilman John Headrick were sworn in by Dayton Municipal Judge Alan D. Conner. Barnes took over the seat previously held by outgoing council member Sherial Lawson, who was recognized for her service to the city by Mayor Martin Mudd.

Following the swearing-in ceremony, council ordered a runoff election for June 15 between the top two candidates from the May 6 election for Position 2. Incumbent council member Janette Goulder-Frick was defeated in that election. She has not attended the last two council meetings since her defeat.

During the meeting, there was also a discussion about a request to rezone 5.65 acres near the intersection of the Grand Parkway and FM 1413 from General Commercial to Suburban Residential. The request was supported by city staff and the Planning and Zoning Commission. However, council members, especially John Headrick, raised concerns about the property’s proximity to the Grand Parkway and access to the intersection.

Headrick emphasized the importance of considering future potential of property and past decisions made regarding its zoning classification before making any changes
