New North Korean Missile Test Sows Tension: Hwasong-11Da-4.5 Capable of Carrying 4.5-Ton Warhead

North Korea conducts test of ballistic missile with capacity for super-sized warheads

In 2021, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un announced the development of advanced weapons as a top priority, including a military spy satellite and a solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile. On Monday, North Korea claimed to have successfully tested a new tactical ballistic missile capable of carrying a large warhead. The missile was identified as the Hwasong-11Da-4.5 and was said to be able to carry a 4.5-ton warhead.

The test launch was carried out to verify the missile’s flight stability and accuracy at various ranges. The Hwasong-11Da-4.5 is the third version of the Hwasong-11, a short-range missile based on the Russian Iskander. Two missiles were launched during the test, with one reportedly exploding in the air, according to South Korea. However, doubts have been raised about North Korea’s claims given recent history of failed missile launches by the country.

Kim Jong Un has previously criticized military exercises conducted by South Korea, the United States, and Japan, warning of “fatal consequences.” The relationship between North and South Korea has deteriorated significantly in recent years, with North Korea ramping up its weapons testing activities. The North has also engaged in provocative actions such as launching balloons loaded with garbage towards South Korea. These actions are seen as retaliatory measures for balloons carrying anti-regime propaganda sent by activists in the South.
