Rochester’s SunDensity accelerates technology development efforts through acquisition.

SunDensity Inc., a solar efficiency solutions company based in Rochester, has recently established a new subsidiary named SunDensity Canada through the acquisition of QD Solar, Inc., a Toronto-based solar materials company. The creation of this subsidiary was made possible through the acquisition of QD Solar, which originated from research conducted at the University of Toronto and is located in the MaRS Discovery District in Toronto.

The acquisition agreement between SunDensity and QD Solar allows the organizations to collaborate on various materials and processes for solar applications, ultimately speeding up technology development. While the terms of the private deal were not disclosed, company leaders expressed excitement about the potential this acquisition holds.

SunDensity CEO Henry Schek highlighted the significance of acquiring QD Solar and its innovative solar solutions. This acquisition aligns with SunDensity’s objective to establish itself as a global leader in solar efficiency solutions. Both companies are alumni of Luminate NY, a leading accelerator for optics, photonics, and imaging tech companies based in Rochester.

SunDensity specializes in Photonic Smart Coatings for solar panels used in utility, commercial, and residential settings to enhance solar power generation and offer more sustainable energy solutions at a reduced cost. On the other hand, QD Solar focuses on developing stable multilayered perovskite-based photovoltaic materials that efficiently convert sunlight into electrical energy.

Following the acquisition, both locations in Rochester and Toronto will continue to operate with the leadership team from QD Solar overseeing activities at SunDensity Canada. By combining their resources, infrastructure
