In Qianjiang, China, a new world record has been set with the inauguration of the world’s largest sodium-ion battery system. Developed by Datang Electric and located in Hubei Province, this system uses 185 Ah sodium-ion batteries manufactured by Chinese company HiNa Battery. The sodium-ion battery system is capable of storing up to 100 MWh of electricity and distributing it to 12,000 homes to meet daily needs.
The grid connection of this sodium-ion battery system marks a significant milestone in renewable energy storage, surpassing the previous record holder in Nanning. This new technology is becoming increasingly important as the world transitions to greener sources of energy such as wind and solar power. While lithium-ion batteries are widely used, sodium-ion batteries offer several advantages such as being safer, more scalable, and performing well in extreme temperatures.
