In recent times, Nigeria has been grappling with a shortage of vaccines to combat cholera. Since the beginning of the year until mid-month, the disease has claimed the lives of 30 individuals. The director-general of Nigeria’s National Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Jide Idris, has reached out to international donors for a new shipment of vaccines, but there is no set date for their arrival yet.
According to reports by Nigerian newspaper ‘Punch,’ between January 1 and June 13, the health agency recorded 1,141 suspected cases of cholera, with 65 confirmed cases and 30 fatalities across thirty states in Nigeria. Lagos State has been particularly affected, with 24 confirmed deaths and 35 confirmed cases since the beginning of the year.
A tally compiled by ‘Punch’ based on CDC data reveals that at least 4,364 individuals have died from cholera in Nigeria since 2021, with close to 140,000 possible cases. The CDC director-general expressed concern over the lack of funds for vaccine procurement and stressed the need for preventive measures such as personal hygiene, hydration, and water purification to tackle the outbreak effectively.
