North Korea Launches Successful Multiple Rocket Launcher Under Kim Jong Un’s Supervision: Strengthening Its Artillery Power Amid Sanctions and Global Concerns

North Korea has recently successfully launched a multiple rocket launcher under the supervision of Kim Jong Un, according to the state news agency KCNA. The official agency reported that the 240 mm shell of the rocket launcher, which was manufactured in a new defense industry unit in Pyongyang, met very satisfactory flight characteristics, impact, and concentration indices during the test.

Kim Jong Un emphasized the importance of carrying out the ammunition production plan in a qualitative manner this year. He highlighted that the new technology-equipped rocket launcher will bring a strategic change in strengthening North Korea’s artillery power. In addition to this, KCNA reported that Kim Jong Un had overseen a first simulated “nuclear trigger” of the country in response to US-South Korean exercises.

The regime has been conducting several missile launches since the start of the year, following a record missile test in 2023. In early April, Pyongyang tested a new medium-to-long-range solid-fueled hypersonic missile, and on April 19, it announced a very large warhead for a strategic cruise missile. Despite facing UN sanctions since 2006, Pyongyang has continued its banned military programs and declared its status as a nuclear power irreversible in 2022.

In recent times, North Korea has intensified its ties with Russia, its traditional ally. However, it has also hardened its tone against South Korea, labeling it as the main enemy with no prospect of reunification. This has led to challenges for international relations as Russia vetoed a draft resolution in March to extend the mandate of the committee of experts monitoring sanctions. Furthermore, Pyongyang has been accused of delivering weapons to Moscow in exchange for military technologies.

Overall, North Korea’s continued pursuit of nuclear power and military programs despite facing international sanctions remains a significant concern for global security and stability.
