Northwest ISD Board Receives Update on Long-Range Technology Plan

At their regular meeting on June 24, the Northwest ISD board members received an update on the district’s long-range technology plan. Chief Technology Officer Cara Carter presented the district’s technology plan for 2024-29, highlighting key components such as cybersecurity measures. Carter emphasized the importance of strategic thinking, expertise, and innovation that went into developing the plan.

One of the main focuses of the plan is cybersecurity, with multiple layers of security in place to protect the district’s cyber system and students’ data. Carter pointed out recent cybersecurity breaches in the education sector, including disruptions during state testing and data records exposed in U.S. schools. She also presented the cybersecurity issues Northwest ISD has faced in the last 90 days, such as cyber attacks, intrusion events, and denied authentications from various continents.

Another crucial aspect of the 2024-29 plan is data governance, as data constantly moves in and out of multiple systems. With the changing nature of how data works in cyber systems, having a strong data governance policy is critical. Carter emphasized the importance of linking new strategies in the plan to educational outcomes, with components such as forward-thinking initiatives, educator professional development, tech-powered learning engagement, and a connected community.

Carter stressed the need for remaining proactive and agile over the next five years to address any challenges that may arise. She highlighted the district’s ongoing efforts to develop strategies against cyber attacks and ensure that the technology plan aligns with educational goals.

Overall, Northwest ISD’s long-range technology plan aims to provide students with access to cutting-edge technology while ensuring their safety and privacy online. The district recognizes that technology must be integrated seamlessly into teaching and learning practices while also being governed responsibly to meet both technological needs and educational goals.
