Norway’s Hydroferry: The World’s Largest Hydrogen-Powered Vessel Set to Revolutionize Maritime Transport in the Arctic Circle

A hydrogen-powered ship is set to revolutionize maritime transport in Norway as Torghatten Nord signs a contract with Myklebust shipyard to build the world’s largest hydrogen-powered vessel. The 117-meter long ship, named Hydroferry, will carry 120 vehicles on Norway’s longest ferry route and specialize in operating in the waters of Vestfjordstrekninga Bay located in the Arctic Circle.

Hydroferry will be powered by green hydrogen produced in Bodø and will travel at an average speed of 31.5 km/h, making it challenging to operate in harsh conditions. However, the design of the ship will ensure efficient operation, with onboard storage supplying hydrogen to the fuel cell, converting energy into electricity for transmission to the propulsion system and auxiliary systems. This use of hydrogen will help reduce approximately 26,500 tons of CO2 emissions annually along the route.

The project is a result of cooperation between Torghatten Nord, Myklebust Verft shipyard, the SEAM system, and hydrogen supplier GreenH. It is significant as it is the first time that passengers will be transported by hydrogen over long distances in harsh conditions. The construction of Hydroferry requires increased staffing and operations at Myklebust’s facility in Gursken, south of Ålesund.

Hydroferry will boost maritime traffic by connecting Bodø, the islands of Røst and Værøy, and Moskenes along the 278km Vestfjordstrekninga ferry route. The project is a pioneering effort in utilizing hydrogen as a clean fuel source for maritime transport.

In addition to working closely with the Norwegian Maritime Steering Committee to establish safety standards for this new class of ships, the project also involves many suppliers who contributed their expertise in design, technology, and equipment. This collaboration has made it possible to build what promises to be a revolutionary vessel that can make a positive impact on our environment while also providing safe and efficient transportation for passengers.

Overall, Hydroferry represents an exciting development for maritime transportation that could have far-reaching implications beyond Norway’s borders. As more countries look towards cleaner forms of energy sources such as hydrogen powering ships like this one could be seen as a major shift towards more sustainable modes of transportation across seas and oceans worldwide.
