In Cairo, representatives from Hamas and Israel engaged in indirect talks aimed at establishing a truce in Gaza. However, after two days of negotiations, the delegations left the Egyptian capital without any tangible results, according to Egyptian state television Al Qahera News. A security source close to Egypt’s Intelligence revealed that both parties departed following the talks, with several contentious issues still unresolved.
Despite this setback, Egypt, Qatar, and the United States continue to work towards bringing Israel and Hamas closer on a truce proposal that was accepted by Hamas on Monday. The group announced its withdrawal from Cairo, citing Israeli aggression in Rafah and the seizure of the border crossing as reasons for its departure. Despite this, Hamas reaffirmed its commitment to accepting the mediators’ document and condemned Israeli actions.
Egypt warned of the danger of escalation if an agreement is not reached between Israel and Hamas. Representatives from Islamic Jihad and other Palestinian factions joined the negotiations on Thursday, indicating progress in resolving some controversial points. The truce proposal accepted by Hamas consists of three phases leading to an exchange of hostages, Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and sustainable calm in the Strip. Despite ongoing challenges, efforts are being made to find consensus and prevent further escalation in the region.
