Pfas Chemicals: The Hidden Dangers of Everyday Products

Recent studies have shown that Pfas chemicals, commonly found in clothing and pans, can have significant negative effects on the body. Researchers from the University of Birmingham conducted tests using artificial skin to investigate the absorption of 17 different Pfas compounds. The results showed that 15 of these compounds were absorbed through the skin, with some absorbing up to 58.9% of the dose placed on the artificial skin. This raises concerns about previous understanding of chemicals entering the body through the skin, as these findings suggest that Pfas compounds may be more harmful than previously thought.

Pfas compounds, also known as “eternity chemicals” due to their long-lasting nature, have been linked to various health issues including weakening vaccine effectiveness and impacting liver and thyroid gland function. In addition to these effects, recent studies have found that Pfas compounds can accumulate in testes and affect sperm formation in mice.

To address these concerns, efforts are being made globally to restrict the use of Pfas compounds. Legislation in places like Colorado aims to ban daily products containing these chemicals, while the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is working on proposals to limit their use in Europe despite lobbying efforts from the chemical industry to prevent strict restrictions. However, further research is needed to fully understand the risks associated with Pfas compounds and develop regulations that protect human health.
