Pro Golfer Scheffler Arrested by Police in Lead-up to PGA Championship Second Round

The PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky., was hit with a major disruption when world-renowned golfer Scottie Scheffler was detained by police and placed in the back of a police car two hours before his second-round tee time. The incident occurred after a pedestrian fatality outside the club prompted a traffic diversion set up by police cars.

According to reports, Scheffler attempted to drive around the traffic diversion but was stopped by a police officer who tried to attach himself to the car. ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the incident, offered assistance but was told that Scheffler would be taken into custody. Scheffler was booked at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections and faced several charges including assault on a police officer.

The second round of the PGA Championship was delayed by 80 minutes due to the incident and pedestrian fatality. Scheffler, who had been favored to win the tournament, was scheduled to tee off later in the morning. Despite this setback, he has established himself as one of golf’s top earners over the past two years with numerous top finishes and significant prize money earnings.

Scheffler ranks 27th on Sportico’s list of the world’s highest-paid athletes in 2023. His success on the course has also translated into lucrative endorsement deals with companies like Nike, TaylorMade, Rolex and others.
