The Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment, in conjunction with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, is currently conducting an investigation into a human case of plague in Pueblo. Preliminary test results have come back positive, prompting further examination of the situation.
Plague is a bacterial disease that is transmitted by fleas and commonly cycles among wild rodents. Humans and pets can also become infected through flea bites, contact with infected animals, or inhaling droplets from infected individuals or animals.
Symptoms of plague include sudden fever, chills, severe headache, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and overall feelings of illness. Swollen lymph nodes are another typical symptom of this disease.
To protect yourself and your pets from plague infection, it is important to take precautions. This includes eliminating rodent breeding grounds around your home, avoiding contact with dead animals, and using insect repellent to prevent flea bites.
