Premier League Introduces Semi-Automated Offside Technology from 2024/25 Season: How It Works and What It Means for the Game

Premier League to implement semi-automated offside technology starting next season

The Premier League has announced that semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) will be implemented starting from the 2024/25 season, with an expected launch in September or October. The introduction of this new system is expected to save around 30 seconds per decision on average and provide quicker and more consistent placement of the virtual offside line.

One notable incident that occurred this season at Tottenham saw Luis Diaz have a goal disallowed due to human error and breakdown in communication among officials. The Hawk-Eye system currently uses a gridline or crosshair approach to determine offside calls, but from next season, it will switch to the SAOT camera and technology used in the Uefa Champions League.

The use of SAOT was seen at the World Cup 2022 in Qatar, with a chip embedded inside the matchday ball. It is currently used in Serie A and will be introduced in LaLiga from 24/25. UEFA plans to switch to the chip-in-ball version for Euro 2024. This technology will enable assistant referees to be informed of offsides almost instantly while play continues, allowing them to raise their flags promptly if an offending player is involved.

The Premier League has stated that clubs unanimously agreed to the introduction of Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT). The new system will be used for the first time next season, with an anticipated introduction after one of the Autumn international breaks.
