Protecting Children from Respiratory Infections: How to Take Action During Unpredictable Weather Conditions

The Importance of Preventing Respiratory Infections in Children

Children are particularly vulnerable to respiratory infections due to their developing immune systems. To prevent these infections, it is essential for children to follow a schedule of vaccinations, wash their hands before eating, avoid rainwater, maintain proper nutrition and hydration, and minimize exposure to pollutants and sick individuals.

According to Dr. Huynh Tran An Khuong, the Medical Manager of VNVC Vaccination System, respiratory diseases can be prevented by implementing these measures during unpredictable weather conditions. Rainy and humid summers create ideal environments for pathogens to thrive, leading to an increase in respiratory infections among children admitted to the Department of Pediatrics at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City compared to May. The typical symptoms seen in hospitalized children include coughing, wheezing, and high fever.

To protect children from respiratory infections caused by pathogens found in rainwater, it is recommended not to go out in heavy rain or bathe with rainwater. If a child does get wet from the rain, it is important to dry them thoroughly and maintain a stable body temperature by drinking hot milk or ginger tea before taking a bath. Limiting exposure to rainwater can also help prevent illnesses caused by bacteria and viruses found in water sources.

Adequate hydration is crucial for maintaining healthy lung function and preventing pathogens from entering the body through dry mucous membranes. Children should drink enough water daily throughout the year, even during rainy weather when they may be more likely to become dehydrated due to increased physical activity or spending time outdoors without adequate protection from the sun’s harmful rays. A well-balanced diet rich in micronutrients can also boost immunity and reduce inflammation caused by allergies or asthma attacks. Breastfeeding is recommended for babies up to 24 months old as it enhances their immune system while older children should consume a variety of foods from all nutrient groups.

Substances like cigarette smoke, household chemicals, and cooking fumes can exacerbate respiratory issues especially among children with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is essential for parents to minimize exposure
