Quantum Physicist Kenneth Intriligator Elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences

UC San Diego Professors elected as members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

David Oxtoby, President of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, recently welcomed a new cohort of 250 members. This group was recognized for their achievements and the curiosity, creativity, and courage necessary to achieve success. The academy was founded on the principles that celebrate intellectual pursuits, the value of knowledge, and the belief that the arts and sciences are essential to the well-being and happiness of a free and virtuous population.

Kenneth Intriligator is one such member who has made significant contributions to physics research. He holds the Broida Chair as a distinguished professor at UC San Diego, where he completed his undergraduate studies and received the S.K. Ma Memorial Prize in Physics. Intriligator obtained his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Harvard University and conducted postdoctoral research at Rutgers University before spending time as a long-term member at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.

Intriligator’s research focuses on quantum fields theory, developing symmetry-based methods to explore new aspects of quantum fields and their connections with mathematics. His work has been recognized with various awards including Simons Investigator status and serving as a co-principal investigator on the Simons Collaboration on Global Categorical Symmetry project.

Intriligator is fascinated by the idea that all matter and interactions are analogous to waves on a quantum “ocean.” This concept refers to his belief that humans are ripples on this ocean of quantum fields that fill all of spacetime. More information about his work can be found in a recorded talk he delivered at Aspen Physics Center where he expressed gratitude towards his mentors, collaborators, starting with his mother who is a space plasma physicist.

As an Academy member, Intriligator looks forward to contributing to its mission of interdisciplinary collaboration to advance common good through its recognition of intellectual pursuits and celebration of knowledge’s value.
