Ranking the 5×5 Value of Second Basemen: A Closer Look at Xavier Edwards and Miguel Vargas

Rankings of Second Basemen in July 2024

The latest July rest-of-season rankings for second basemen have been released, and here is how the players are listed based on their perceived 5×5 value going forward. In two weeks, the way-too-early 2025 rankings will be presented in the same format. As we look at the rankings, it’s surprising that some players are still not getting a chance in the big leagues despite having great performances in Triple-A. One such player is Xavier Edwards of the Marlins, who is currently batting .330 in Triple-A but has yet to receive a call up to play for his team. Despite this, he continues to be one of their top prospects and could potentially become one of their top five hitters if given a chance.

On the other hand, there are some players who have shown promise and could contribute significantly if given an opportunity. One such player is Miguel Vargas of the Dodgers, who has already posted a .324/.385/.529 in his 39 plate appearances. While it’s unlikely that he will get regular at-bats anytime soon, it would be interesting to see him perform at this level consistently in the majors and become a quality starter for his team.

Overall, these rankings provide valuable insight into which second basemen have shown potential this season and could continue to do so in future seasons if given opportunities in the big leagues.
