Revolutionizing Biofuels with Neogen’s CelluSmart Technology

Neogen launches CelluSmart technology for biofuel sector

Neogen®, a pioneering innovator in food safety solutions, has launched the new CelluSmart technology from Megazyme® for measuring cellulosic ethanol in biofuel production. This revolutionary technology surpasses the previous NREL procedure by incorporating a yeast-degrading cocktail (YDC), enabling the ethanol sector to produce low-carbon fuels more efficiently.

Cellulosic ethanol is a vital component in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 60% compared to standard petroleum-based fuels, contributing to climate goals. The CelluSmart technology provides an opportunity for ethanol producers to further decrease carbon intensity scores, potentially opening up new markets such as sustainable aviation fuel.

John Adent, president and CEO of Neogen, underscored the significance of the ethanol industry in providing low-carbon renewable energy. By leveraging its expertise in fiber and carbohydrate method development, Neogen supports the industry’s growth and promotes sustainability through its CelluSmart technology.

Dr. Jason Lilly, Neogen’s vice president for the Americas and Australia/New Zealand, emphasized the company’s longstanding partnership with the biofuel sector and its commitment to delivering innovative solutions that meet EPA requirements. The inclusion of CelluSmart into ASTM Method E-3417-24 ensures compliance with voluntary consensus standards bodies while advancing collaboration between Neogen and the ethanol industry towards a more sustainable future.
