Revolutionizing Crisis Response: The Marcus Alert System and Virginia’s Commitment to Improved Mental Health Care

Arlington County Unveils New Mental Health Crisis Response System – NBC4 Washington

The Marcus Alert System is a new system implemented by Arlington County to improve responses to individuals in a mental health crisis. This system connects the 911 call center, regional crisis center, and law enforcement to offer better services and responses to individuals experiencing a mental health, substance abuse, or developmental disability crisis. The Marcus Alert System is also in operation in Prince William, Loudoun, and Fairfax Counties.

The system aims to bridge the gap between behavioral health and criminal justice systems by providing equitable access to behavioral health resources for all individuals. In 2020, a law was passed that requires Virginia localities to establish protocols for enhanced responses to mental health calls.

Having undergone specialized training, emergency call takers are equipped to handle mental health and psychotic disorders and de-escalate crisis situations effectively. This training is crucial in ensuring a compassionate behavioral health response in these critical moments.

The goal of the Marcus Alert System is to direct individuals in crisis towards behavioral health responses instead of law enforcement. By 2028, all cities and towns in Virginia with more than 40,000 residents are required to have this system in place to better respond to individuals in mental health crises.
