AMOLED Display Technology Primed to Lead Smartphone Market in 2024, Predicts Display Daily

In recent years, AMOLED technology has emerged as a leading force in the smartphone display market. According to Omdia’s latest Smartphone Display Market Tracker, AMOLED is expected to surpass TFT LCD shipments by 2024, cementing its position as the dominant technology in this space. The smartphone display market has experienced a rapid recovery in 2023, driven by increased outdoor and travel activities after the full lifting of COVID-19 control measures in the second quarter of the year.

In 2023, annual smartphone display shipments reached 1.45 billion units, marking a 5% year-on-year increase from 2022. This growth trend is expected to continue, with projections showing shipments in the first half of 2024 reaching 715 million units, a 9% year-on-year increase. This indicates that consumers are increasingly demanding higher quality displays on their mobile devices, and AMOLED technology is well-positioned to meet these demands.

AMOLED shipments rose to 182 million units in the first quarter of 2024, marking a significant 39% year-on-year increase. In contrast, TFT LCD shipments fell to 172 million units, a 10% year-on-year drop. This marks the first time that AMOLED shipments have exceeded TFT LCD shipments on a quarterly basis. Omdia’s short-term forecast predicts that AMOLED will account for 53% of smartphone display shipments in the second quarter of 2024 and is expected to expand to 56% in the third quarter of the year, surpassing a 50% market share.
