Rural Community Fight Back Against Proposed Development on McDowell Shortcut Road

A couple residing on McDowell Shortcut Road in Murrells Inlet has voiced their opposition to a proposed 80-acre development that would see 100 homes constructed across from Ranch Haven Drive near Highway 707. The area was previously farmland, but the residents now face challenges such as flooding, traffic, and overdevelopment.

Horry County’s planning commission recently discussed the project, which would place single-family homes on land where nearly half of it is considered wetlands. Kristen and John Owens, who have lived on McDowell Shortcut Road since 2005, have witnessed significant development in the area over the years.

The Owens purchased their 11-acre property in 2018 with a commitment to preserving it as a working farm. They are concerned about the impact of the proposed development on the area’s infrastructure, traffic congestion, and flooding risks. With the road already at 95% capacity and schools overenrolled, they worry about the consequences of further development on local families and communities.

Kristen and John Owens also raise concerns about speeding on McDowell Shortcut Road and worry about the safety of their animals, including miniature and full-size horses, in the face of increased traffic and development. They urge Horry County leaders to reconsider the proposed project and think about how it will affect future generations who will inherit this land.

The planning commission is set to make its recommendation on July 11, with some officials anticipating strong opposition from community members like Kristen and John Owens. However, for now, they remain adamant that enough is enough and that it’s time to preserve what remains of this peaceful rural community for future enjoyment.
