In a bid to form a larger alternative group in Europe, Italian politician Matthew Salvini is drawing closer to the ‘Patriots’ movement founded by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The coalition, which also includes the Austrian FPO and Czech ANO party, aims to challenge the dominance of the current EPP, Socialists, and Liberals agreements in Europe.
Salvini’s goal is to establish a broader Eurogroup of Identity and Democracy, with the League currently collaborating with France’s Rassemblement National. The ‘Patriots for Europe’ now include FPO and newly-added Chega from Portugal. Salvini is also considering Orban’s project while awaiting a decision from Italy’s Brothers of Italy party.
FdI reactions are mixed as they are also in talks with their PiS allies from Poland. If PiS joins the ‘Patriots’ group, it would impact Meloni’s coalition significantly. Forza Italia remains aligned with the EPP and supports collaboration with Meloni’s party in the European Parliament for the new commission.
Negotiations are ongoing, and FdI will ultimately base their decision on progress made during these talks and how it will benefit Italy within the new executive structure.
