San Antonio Prioritizes Public Health and Well-being with Gold Medal Designation, Community Events, and Dr. Fernando A. Guerra Scholarships.

In honor of National Public Health Week, the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District has launched a series of programming events aimed at promoting health and well-being among residents. These events include offering scholarships dedicated to the memory of former director, Dr. Fernando A. Guerra, as well as hosting community events to encourage residents to take a unified approach to public health and community well-being.

San Antonio has been recognized nationally with a gold medal designation from CityHealth for its commitment to public health. City Manager Erik Walsh expressed the importance of focusing on health and well-being as a priority for all residents with the support of Metro Health and other local organizations.

To honor Dr. Fernando A. Guerra’s legacy, Metro Health and its partners are offering scholarships to two local university students pursuing a career in public health. These scholarships are available for application from April 1 to May 5. Metro Health Director Dr. Claude A. Jacob expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with the San Antonio Area Foundation and local universities to honor Dr. Guerra’s dedication to public health.

The American Public Health Association (APHA) is promoting daily themes during National Public Health Week to raise awareness and encourage action on issues that impact community health, such as climate change and creating healthy neighborhoods. Mayor Ron Nirenberg highlighted the importance of residents committing to wellness to create a healthier, more resilient community.

In addition to these initiatives, Metro Health is hosting a Public Health Fest on April 4 at Mission Marquee Plaza. This event will offer free resources including vaccinations, health screenings, and information on Metro Health programs. It is an opportunity for residents to learn more about public health initiatives and take proactive steps towards improving their well-being.

Overall, these events aim to promote healthy living among San Antonio residents by encouraging them to prioritize their well-being and seek out resources that can help them improve their overall health and quality of life.

Metro Health is committed to providing resources that support the community’s efforts towards bettering their overall wellness through education, outreach programs, and partnerships with other organizations in the city.

By supporting these initiatives, San Antonio can continue its recognition as one of the most healthy cities in America while also promoting positive changes in its community members’ lives.

As part of these efforts, Metro Health has partnered with several organizations in San Antonio area foundation (SAF) and local universities like UTSA College of Medicine & Nursing Science (UTHSCN) and Trinity University School of Allied Health Professions (SAHP) to offer scholarships dedicated to Dr Fernando A Guerra’s memory.

These scholarships are aimed at providing financial assistance for students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement or leadership potential in their pursuit of careers in public health fields.

The scholarship program reflects Metro Health’s commitment towards building future generations of healthcare professionals who will be dedicated towards making our communities more resilient through better accessibility
