Science Comes to Life: Creating a DIY Balloon Hovercraft in the Classroom with Meteorologist Sarah Spivey

Sarah’s Science Experiment: Building Balloon Hovercrafts

Meteorologist Sarah Spivey is excited to bring science to life on Wednesday mornings with her demonstrations on GMSA@9. This week, students at Thousand Oaks Elementary had the opportunity to participate in a balloon hovercraft experiment.

To get started with this fun and educational experiment, you’ll need a hot glue gun, an old CD or DVD, a large balloon, and a pop-top cap. Here are the steps to create your own hovercraft:

1. Decorate your CD or DVD if you’d like.

2. Using the hot glue, attach the closed pop-top to the middle of the CD or DVD.

3. Blow up your balloon and twist it – do not tie it! By twisting it you’ll temporarily keep the air from flowing out of the balloon.

4. Place the balloon over the pop top.

5. Open the pop top and watch as your hovercraft floats on the table!

If you’d like Sarah and David to come to your school and conduct a science experiment live on KSAT, fill out this form for a chance to be selected as one of “Winners”.
