Toronto Blue Jays infielder Orelvis Martinez was suspended for 80 games by Major League Baseball just two days after making his Major League debut. The 22-year-old Dominican tested positive for clomiphene, a banned performance-enhancing drug on the MLB’s list.
Martinez explained that he was prescribed Rejun 50, which contains clomiphene, by a fertility clinic in the Dominican Republic as he and his girlfriend have been trying to start a family since 2020. Despite his intentions, Martinez acknowledged his mistake and accepted his suspension.
Having signed with the Blue Jays in 2018 for $3.5 million, Martinez had become one of the top power-hitting prospects in the minor leagues. Blue Jays executive vice president and general manager Ross Atkins expressed surprise and disappointment over Martinez’s suspension, promising to support him through the ordeal and help him learn from his mistake.
Despite their current struggles with injuries and poor performance, the Blue Jays currently sit in last place in the American League East division with a record of 35 wins and 41 losses.
