Skater of the Year: Sakamoto Kaori’s Dominant 2023-24 Season and Olympic Aspirations

Sakamoto Kaori had an incredible 2023-24 season, and it culminated in her being named Skater of the Year at the annual Japan Skating Federation awards ceremony on April 24th. This marked the first time in over 50 years that a woman has won the World Figure Skating Championships for three consecutive years, tying Asada Mao for the most victories by a Japanese female.

Sakamoto’s success didn’t stop there. She also secured her first Grand Prix Final in December in Beijing and clinched her third successive title at the Japanese nationals. Her victory in Montreal last month was her seventh win in as many meets throughout the season, solidifying her dominant performance.

Being named Skater of the Year was the perfect way to top off her successful season. In a statement, Sakamoto expressed her happiness at achieving her goal for the season of winning both the World championships and the nationals for the third straight time. She felt gratified that her hard work was recognized and appreciated by others.

Looking forward to the 2024-25 season, Sakamoto acknowledged the importance of preparing for the upcoming Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.
