As the National Weather Service issues an Excessive Heat Warning for much of Sonoma County, Dr. Tanya Phares, the County of Sonoma Health Officer, has issued a Heat Advisory in response. An extreme heat event is an extended period of intense heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees. In such conditions, evaporation slows down and the body has to work harder to maintain a normal temperature, which can be dangerous and even fatal.
To prepare for extreme heat, it is important to know where to find cooling centers, how to deal with power outages and more. Cooling centers will be available at various locations throughout the county during the heat advisory period.
The COTS Mary Isaak Center in Petaluma will be open from Tuesday through Thursday between 12:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The Rohnert Park Community Center will be open from Tuesday through Wednesday as well as Friday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Finley Community Center in Santa Rosa will also be open from Tuesday through Wednesday between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., while the Senior Recreation Center Cooling Safe Haven in Windsor will be open from Tuesday to Wednesday between 9 a.m
