As the National Weather Service issues an Excessive Heat Warning for much of Sonoma County, Dr. Tanya Phares, the County of Sonoma Health Officer, has issued a Heat Advisory in response. An extreme heat event is an extended period of intense heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees. In such conditions, evaporation slows down and the body has to work harder to maintain a normal temperature, which can be dangerous and even fatal.
To prepare for extreme heat, it is important to know where to find cooling centers, how to deal with power outages and more. For more information on how to stay safe in hot weather, visit the Extreme Heat page on the county’s website. Cooling centers will be available at various locations throughout the county during the heat advisory period.
