The Women for Africa Foundation, chaired by María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, former Vice-President of the Spanish Government, is set to premiere a documentary film titled “The Science of African Women”. This will take place on Thursday, 23 May at 18:00 at the Palacio de la Prensa in Madrid.

The film will take viewers on an insightful journey through the first eight years of the “Science by Women/Ellas Investigan” project, which enables African women scientists to spend time at top research centers in Spain. Through direct testimonies from these leading African women scientists from different countries, the documentary highlights the unique and challenging experiences these women face in their fields.

The researchers featured in the film share their personal stories, discussing issues such as gender inequality, professional obstacles they have overcome, and disparities between science in their countries and Western countries. They also shed light on the difficulties they face in accessing industry and technical resources needed for their research.

Moreover, the documentary showcases current projects that these researchers are working on many of which have direct applications in their societies. Despite limited resources, many of them have found innovative approaches often unexplored in Western world that enrich their work and contribute new perspectives and knowledge to global scientific community.

Directed by journalist Begoña Piña and filmmaker Pedro Mambrú, “The Science of African Women” is a powerful call to action to support and promote scientific excellence across Africa. This project has already transformed not only the lives of African women scientists but also institutions hosting them and collaborating colleagues highlighting the importance of scientific cooperation as a key element for progress in any field.
