The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland collapsed on Tuesday morning, resulting in the death of six construction workers and the miraculous survival of one. The workers, all employees of Brawner Builders, were on their meal break when a cargo ship collided with the bridge. Two people were rescued from the water, but the fate of the other six workers remains unknown.
The Dali cargo ship, which was tagged with a Singapore flag, crashed into the bridge around 1:30 a.m., causing it to collapse. Engineers stated that the bridge collapse was inevitable due to the sheer force of the cargo ship and not as a result of any construction oversights. Governor Wes Moore of Maryland praised the crew’s actions for preventing further casualties.
Search and rescue efforts were suspended Tuesday evening after officials deemed that there was no chance that any of the missing workers could be found alive. The bodies of those presumed dead have not yet been recovered due to the depth and time that has passed since the incident occurred.
