Three American Stars and a Wild Card: Gauff, Anisimova, and Collins to Compete in Madrid Open Singles Draw

Coco Gauff has the chance to surpass Aryna Sabalenka for world No. 2 in Madrid.

In Madrid, 13 American women are set to compete in the singles draw, including third-seeded Gauff, wild card Amanda Anisimova, and Danielle Collins. Gauff will face off against Arantxa Rus in her opening match, with the possibility of facing Anisimova in the last 16 and a potential clash against Naomi Osaka. Sabalenka, a two-time champion in Madrid, will meet either Magda Linette or Elisabetta Cocciaretto in her first round match, with Collins as a potential last 16 opponent.

Sabalenka’s victories in Madrid include winning over Iga Swiatek and Ashleigh Barty in the finals of 2021 and 2022 respectively. Despite having a strong season record of 19-6, Gauff is only 3-3 in Madrid. Her best result in the Spanish capital was reaching the last 16 in 2022. Interestingly enough, Gauff achieved a career-high ranking of world No. 3 following her victory at the US Open where she defeated Sabalenka to claim her first Grand Slam singles title.
