Three Dead Babies in 2023: The Urgent Need for Vaccination against Whooping Cough and Other Deadly Diseases

Last week, a tragic incident occurred in the Jerusalem area, where a five-week-old baby passed away due to whooping cough. The baby was not vaccinated against pertussis during pregnancy, and at such a young age, he could not receive the vaccine himself. Typically, the first dose of the vaccine is given to babies at two months old. However, it can be administered earlier in cases of outbreaks. Unfortunately, the vaccine is not effective until six weeks after administration.

This recent case marks the third death of a baby due to whooping cough since an outbreak earlier in 2023. It serves as a reminder of how crucial vaccination is, especially for vulnerable populations. Pertussis claims the lives of about one percent of unvaccinated babies who contract it, making vaccination during pregnancy and routine vaccinations for children essential for saving lives. Vaccination against diseases like tetanus is also crucial, as seen in a recent case of a seven-year-old girl from Netanya who contracted tetanus due to not being vaccinated. Tetanus is not contagious between individuals but is contracted through spores found in soil, highlighting the importance of regular vaccination.

Routine vaccinations in Israel also protect against diphtheria, polio, and HIB. These vaccinations are critical for preventing the spread of these deadly diseases. The Ministry of Health has recently highlighted an increase in West Nile fever cases with reported fatalities. Prevention methods include avoiding mosquito bites as they are primary carriers; unfortunately, there is currently no vaccine or cure for West Nile fever with treatment limited to supportive care only.

As Israel continues to battle against COVID-19’s spread especially with an increase in daily cases and hospitalizations; those in risk groups should take precautions by using masks in enclosed spaces and avoiding crowded areas until the situation improves. Stay informed about vaccination schedules and updates from health authorities to protect yourself and your community from preventable diseases like COVID-19.

In conclusion, this tragic incident highlights the importance of vaccination during pregnancy and routine vaccinations for children against deadly diseases like whooping cough and tetanus while prevention measures must be taken against West Nile fever’s spread by avoiding mosquito bites since there’s no cure yet available.
