Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly, a clinical epidemiologist at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been named to the inaugural Time100 Health list. This new annual list recognizes the top 100 individuals who have had the greatest impact on global health.
Al-Aly is widely recognized for his research on long-term health effects of COVID-19, also known as long COVID. He leads a team of researchers at the Clinical Epidemiology Center at the Washington University-affiliated Veterans Affairs (VA) St. Louis Health Care System, where he serves as director and head of research and development service.
Al-Aly’s work has drawn international attention for his significant expertise in deriving insights from big data. By leveraging the power of a comprehensive health records database maintained by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which contains more than 10 million people, Al-Aly has found that individuals who have been infected with SARS-CoV-2 are at higher risk of developing long-term heart, brain, kidney, gastrointestinal and mental health problems compared to those who have not.
His research has contributed significantly to our understanding of long COVID and its impact on individuals’ health outcomes, and it continues to shape public health policies related to this condition.
