The chemical-laden products used in nail salons pose a serious threat to the health of women nail technicians, primarily Asian and Latin American immigrants. A recent study by the New York Health Nails Salons Coalition found that these workers are more likely to experience reproductive health issues compared to the general population. This has led to calls for legislation aimed at creating standards within the industry known for poor working conditions, wage theft, and health risks.
Assembly Member Harry Bronson and Sen. Jessica Ramos have taken up this cause, advocating for a Nail Salon Minimum Standards Council Act that would establish an industry council made up of workers, employers, and government representatives to recommend new labor standards for nail salons in New York. Bronson emphasized the importance of addressing harmful practices within the industry, stating that shortcuts taken to save costs harm not only employees but also impact the economy and future generations’ health.
However, despite its growth in New York, the report highlights illegal working conditions prevalent in nail salons. Health risks associated with chemicals in nail products have emerged as a major concern among nail technicians. According to a survey of 312 women nail techs in New York, 17% have experienced reproductive health issues and 18% faced pregnancy complications – higher than the general U.S. population. Additionally, 7% reported that their child was born with birth defects compared to 2-4% in the general population.
Senator Ramos expressed support for redesigning the nail salon sector to prioritize women’s health while still promoting small businesses. The push for legislative changes aims to ensure a safer and healthier working environment for nail salon technicians in New York
