Toyota Motor North America has teamed up with utility provider Potomac Electric (Pepco) to study vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology for electric vehicles (EVs). Pepco, owned by Exelon, serves the Washington D.C. area and neighboring communities in Maryland.
The collaboration will take place at Pepco’s Watershed Sustainability Center in Montgomery County, Maryland, using a bidirectional charger. Together, Toyota and Pepco will investigate various EV charging and discharging scenarios to demonstrate the advantages of V2G to customers.
The research will concentrate on a Toyota bZ4X vehicle, examining the charging habits and driving patterns of EV owners. According to Toyota, most EV owners charge their vehicles at home overnight when electricity demand is low.
Christopher Yang, VP of Toyota’s EV Charging Solutions Group, expressed excitement about the partnership with Pepco, highlighting the importance of understanding charging and discharging use cases to benefit customers and assist utility providers in managing grid demands.
