Trading Brandon Ingram: Pelicans’ New Approach to Limited Options in NBA Playoffs?

As the New Orleans Pelicans face limited options for shot creation and shooting after the departure of Paul George and Klay Thompson, interest in trading Brandon Ingram has increased. Teams are looking to bolster their rosters, and DeMar DeRozan and Lauri Markkanen have also garnered attention as potential trade targets.

Recent reports suggest that attempts to trade Ingram have intensified, with his camp exploring various options due to a lack of progress on contract extension talks with the Pelicans. New Orleans is hesitant to pay Ingram the next contract as he enters the final year of his current deal at $36 million.

The Pelicans have recently added Dejounte Murray and Trey Murphy III to their roster, which could lead to a decision to trade Ingram in order to clear a pathway for Murphy. The Sacramento Kings have been mentioned as a potential trade partner for Ingram, with a possible deal involving Harrison Barnes, Kevin Huerter, and picks.

Ingram had solid averages of 20.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 5.7 assists in nearly 33 minutes per game last season for the Pelicans. However, his injury history is a concern for teams interested in acquiring him. Additionally, looming decisions about rookie contract extensions for players like Murphy could be driving New Orleans’ push to trade Ingram.

Despite these challenges, it’s clear that the Pelicans are determined to find new ways to compete in the NBA’s Western Conference playoffs next season. With continued efforts from GM David Griffin and head coach Alvin Gentry, this team has what it takes to make it back into contention once again.
