On Saturday, a tragic accident occurred near a British air force base in eastern England, resulting in the death of a pilot. The incident happened near RAF Coningsby air base and the cause of the crash is still unknown.
The Royal Air Force has temporarily grounded the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, which is based at RAF Coningsby and consists of wartime fighter and bomber aircraft used in air shows and memorial displays. The Memorial Flight is home to six Spitfires, including one that was involved in the crash.
The Spitfire played a significant role in defending the U.K. during World War II, and it remains an iconic symbol of the Battle of Britain. Prime Minister Winston Churchill famously praised the bravery of Battle of Britain airmen, acknowledging their crucial role in the conflict. Today, only a few dozen airworthy Spitfires remain worldwide.
Group Captain Robbie Lees, commander of the display air wing at RAF Coningsby, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Squadron Leader Mark Long, who had been a Typhoon pilot at RAF Coningsby and was also a pilot with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Mark was remembered as a great friend, colleague, and passionate aviator who will be greatly missed.
Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash in Coningsby where it was confirmed that only one occupant had lost their life – the pilot – shortly before aircraft were set to take part in events commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
