Trump’s Controversial Branded Bibles: Exploiting Religion for Profit?

In an interview with Dana Bash on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Sen. Raphael Warnock, a Democratic Senator from Georgia and a reverend, criticized former President Donald Trump for selling branded Bibles. Warnock emphasized that the Bible does not need Trump’s endorsement and that selling sacred items for profit goes against the teachings of the religion.

Trump’s branded Bibles, which were released in partnership with country singer Lee Greenwood, include copies of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. The sales have raised concerns about Christian nationalism in the country, with critics questioning the sincerity of Trump’s religious affiliations.

Warnock pointed out that those who purchase these Bibles might be confronted with the teachings within, such as ‘Thou shalt not lie’ and ‘shalt not bear false witness.’ He warned that Trump should tread carefully as selling Bibles under his brand could be seen as exploiting religion for personal gain.

The backlash against the Bible sales reflects a broader concern about the intersection of religion and politics in the public sphere. Former Rep. Liz Cheney also spoke out against them, suggesting that Trump should instead read a Bible, referencing the commandment against adultery in Exodus 20:14.
