Twins Shuffle Roster to Strengthen Bullpen: Promoting Jay Jackson and Sending Louie Varland Back

Jay Jackson returns to Twins roster; other updates on players and health

The Twins are shuffling their roster to strengthen their bullpen. Right-hander Jay Jackson was promoted to the active roster for Wednesday’s game against the Colorado Rockies, while starter Louie Varland was sent back to Triple-A St. Paul. To make room for Jackson on the 40-man roster, reliever Diego Castillo was designated for release or assignment after appearing in five games.

In a corresponding move, Varland started Tuesday’s game against the Rockies and pitched well, allowing only one hit and no runs in five innings. Manager Rocco Baldelli praised Varland’s outing and expects him to be ready to contribute later in the season if needed. Jackson will be asked to pitch in various situations out of the bullpen.

Jackson, 36, signed with the Twins in the offseason and began the year in the majors but struggled with a 6.85 ERA in 17 appearances. He was sent to Triple-A on May 19 but had a solid performance with a 3.00 ERA in three innings before being called back up. The Twins are looking forward to having him as part of their bullpen rotation moving forward.

Castillo had performed well in Triple-A but struggled with control while pitching with the Twins, issuing seven walks despite his solid performance of a 2.57 ERA in five appearances with them.

The Twins are confident that these changes will help improve their bullpen strength and performance as they continue their season against tough opponents like Colorado Rockies.
