Kharkiv defense commander relieved of duty amid rapid Russian advance in Ukraine

Russian troops have launched a rapid offensive north of Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine, capturing seven villages. The invaders are now threatening to advance towards the second largest Ukrainian city, prompting the high command of the Army to relieve the commander in charge of the province’s defense. Brigadier General Mijaílo Drapatii has replaced Brigadier General Yuri Galushkin, although no official reasons for the change have been provided.

The Russian offensive in this sector was anticipated by the Ukrainian military leadership, with alarms raised since the beginning of May. Criticism has emerged within the army regarding the lack of fortifications on the border to halt the invaders.
