She advises individuals to be cautious when choosing packaged snacks, cereals, cookies, and fast food as these are common sources of hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, flavor enhancers, and additives.

To identify which foods in your pantry are ultra-processed, Simkus suggests checking the ingredients. These foods typically contain ingredients such as hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, flavor enhancers, and additives. By being attentive to ingredient labels and making small changes to reduce the consumption of ultra-processed foods, individuals can make a significant difference in their health outcomes.

A recent study published in the British Medical Journal linked high consumption of ultra-processed foods to adverse health outcomes such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, certain cancers, and mental health issues like anxiety and depression.
