Following the recent vote that placed the extreme right in a strong position, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced on Sunday evening that the unemployment insurance reform would be temporarily suspended. This decision was made in order to prevent a legal vacuum and ensure that benefits continue to be paid to those in need.
The proposed reform, set by the current majority, aimed to tighten access conditions to benefits and reduce the maximum duration of compensation. However, it faced opposition from various parties, including the far right, the left-wing alliance, and unions. President Emmanuel Macron initially supported the reform but expressed willingness to consider different “modalities.”
In order to address concerns about changing positions for electoral advantage, Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire expressed his discontent with the decision. He stressed the importance of continuing reforms and ensuring that necessary changes are made in a timely manner.
Despite the temporary suspension of the reform, the government remains committed to resuming discussions and moving forward with necessary changes in the coming months.
