UNESCO Dialogue Promotes Gender Equality in Science: How Scientific Research is Impacting Our Lives and Addressing Global Challenges

Conversations with the Winners of the 2024 L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science International Awards

This exciting conversation will bring together Member States, accomplished and emerging scientists, stakeholders from the public and private sectors, UNESCO scientific networks and Chairs, as well as students. The Dialogue will explore two critical questions: the impact of science on our daily lives and its role in addressing global challenges.

Science is a powerful force that shapes every aspect of our daily lives, from the technology in our phones to the agricultural innovations that shape our food choices. It plays a vital role in addressing global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, diseases, and extreme poverty. Its importance goes beyond our routines and is essential for progress and development.

During the first part of the Dialogue, the 2024 Laureates will present their groundbreaking research in various fields such as biology, clinical medicine, health sciences, and environmental studies. They will also discuss how their work contributes to tackling pressing global issues. The Dialogue will shed light on the impact of scientific research and innovation on society.

Launched on International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2024, UNESCO’s Call to Action: Closing the Gender Gap in Science highlights the importance of promoting gender equality in science. It calls for urgent collaborative actions at all levels to address gender disparities in science. The Call to Action emphasizes that it is crucial for both advancing women’s progress in science and promoting scientific progress overall.

In the second part of the Dialogue, the 2024 Laureates will share their insights and discuss strategies for advancing gender equality in science. They will explore ways to create a more inclusive scientific community where women can thrive without facing barriers or discrimination based on gender.

The Dialogue aims to inspire collaboration among all stakeholders involved in promoting gender equality in science. By working together towards this common goal, we can create a more diverse scientific community that benefits us all while contributing to solving some of humanity’s most pressing challenges.

The 2024 International Day of Women and Girls in Science serves as a reminder that we still have much work to do when it comes to promoting gender equality in science. With this Call to Action launched by UNESCO, we can take significant steps towards closing this gap once and for all.

The Dialogue promises to be an engaging conversation that sheds light on critical questions related to science’s impact on daily life and its role in addressing global challenges. We look forward to hearing insights from accomplished scientists who have made groundbreaking contributions to various fields while pushing boundaries towards more sustainable solutions for our planet’s future needs.
