In November-December 2024, the World Chess Championship will be held in Singapore. The match will see reigning world champion Ding Liren face off against 18-year-old challenger Gukesh. This is a historic battle for the title of youngest world champion.
The announcement was made by FIDE on Monday. Gukesh made history at the age of 17 by winning the eight-player Candidates tournament and earning the right to challenge Ding for the championship.
FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich expressed his excitement about hosting the event in Singapore, highlighting its status as a global tourist and business hub, as well as a thriving chess center with great potential and talent. The decision to host the match in Singapore came after a selection process that also involved New Delhi and Chennai, with factors such as neutrality, guaranteed revenue, and promotional opportunities for the game being considered by the 15-member FIDE Council.
