Vermont Welcomes Memphis Guard Jayhlon Young to Boost Guard Position for 2023-24 Season

Vermont Seeking to Participate in Federal Health Care Reform Program

Vermont’s men’s basketball team is preparing for the 2023-24 season with a solid returning lineup, but they recently welcomed former Memphis guard Jayhlon Young to the team. The addition of Young is expected to strengthen the guard position for the Catamounts.

Young has had an impressive college basketball career, playing at Grambling before moving on to junior college and then UCF before landing at Memphis. During his time at UCF, he played over 19 minutes per game, averaging 4.5 points and shooting nearly 36% from three-point range. However, his minutes and usage decreased when he transferred to Memphis last year.

With the departure of guard Aaron Deloney due to graduation, Vermont is looking to Young to help fill the void in production. The Catamounts are hopeful that his experience and skills will make a positive impact on the team as they prepare for the upcoming season.

The Catamounts have a strong returning lineup that includes seniors Payton Pfefferle and Sam Schultz, as well as junior Stefano Mancini. Their addition of Young is expected to boost their offense, especially in the guard position.

Young was highly sought after by several schools including UMass, UTSA and Wichita State but ultimately chose Vermont because of its reputation for developing players and its commitment to academic excellence.

Vermont’s head coach John Becker said “Jayhlon is a very talented player who can score from anywhere on the court. He brings experience and leadership to our program.”

The Catamounts will begin their season with an exhibition game against Holy Cross on October 30th at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
