Vietnam’s Growing Childhood Obesity Epidemic: How to Prevent and Reverse the Trend

The issue of childhood obesity is becoming increasingly prevalent in Vietnam, with UNICEF projecting that the country will have around 1.9 million obese children by 2030. Dr. Pham Thi Hong from Tam Anh General Hospital warns of the long-term risks associated with obesity in children, such as early puberty and non-communicable diseases like diabetes and hypertension.

To prevent or improve this condition, it is essential to establish a balanced diet and lifestyle in children. Encouraging physical activity, healthy eating habits, and timely meals can significantly impact a child’s overall health and well-being. Physical activity should be done together as a family to strengthen bonds, increase flexibility, and reduce the risk of obesity in both children and adults.

Children need at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity to stay healthy. Adequate sleep is also crucial for their health as it can reduce the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other health problems. Creating a conducive sleep environment and limiting electronic device usage before bedtime can promote better sleep quality.

Reducing screen time is also crucial to prevent childhood obesity as prolonged use of electronic devices often leads to decreased physical activity and unhealthy eating habits. Limiting TV viewing and video game time can help children maintain a healthy weight.

Stress can also contribute to childhood obesity by increasing cravings for sugary and fatty foods. Encouraging stress-relief activities and games can be beneficial in preventing childhood obesity.

Regular monitoring of a child’s weight and height is important to detect any abnormalities early on. Seeking advice from an endocrinologist if necessary can help parents address any concerns and prevent obesity in children.

By focusing on a balanced diet, regular physical activity, quality sleep, and limited screen time, parents can help their children maintain a healthy weight and overall well-being.
