West Nile Virus: A Growing Concern in the US with 153 Diagnoses and 11 Deaths

11 dead, 153 infected as Nile fever outbreak escalates

The West Nile virus has been spreading throughout the country, resulting in 153 diagnoses and 11 deaths. The concern is mounting as infected mosquitoes have been found in the south, indicating a potential for up to 300 more infected individuals. Hospitals are currently treating patients with experimental treatments such as interferon, which shows promise in combating the virus. However, some patients require ventilator support due to neurological complications and brain damage caused by the virus.

The disease is transmitted through infected mosquitoes that initially bite birds before spreading it to humans. While most cases of infection are mild, some can lead to severe outcomes such as meningitis or encephalitis. Those with weakened immune systems, infants, and the elderly are at higher risk of experiencing severe symptoms. There is currently no vaccine available for humans against the West Nile virus, but treatments such as IVIG and interferon are being explored to boost the immune system’s ability to fight off the virus.

Preventative measures such as using mosquito repellents, window nets, and reporting mosquito clusters can help control the spread of the disease. If you experience any warning signs after a mosquito bite, including prolonged fever, vomiting, decreased urination, rapid breathing, altered mental state
