West Nile Virus Cases in Israel: Health Ministry Issues Warning and Urges Extra Precautions

The Health Ministry issued a warning about the increase in West Nile virus cases this year, urging residents to take extra precautions. Since May, 19 people have been diagnosed with the virus, with 17 requiring hospitalization and three needing ventilators. The affected individuals all come from the central region of the country.

West Nile virus has been present in Israel for many years, typically between June and November. This year, the virus appeared earlier than usual, possibly due to climate change and the humid weather in the central region promoting mosquito reproduction. To reduce the risk of exposure to mosquitoes, the Ministry advises residents to use repellents and other anti-mosquito devices like fans in their homes.

Individuals with compromised immune systems are at higher risk of contracting the virus. When a case of West Nile virus is confirmed, the Health Ministry conducts an epidemiological investigation and collaborates with the Environmental Protection Ministry for local pest control efforts. Additionally, both ministries will provide information to the public about areas where mosquitoes carrying the virus are present.

The Health Ministry also advises residents to be cautious when traveling to areas where West Nile virus is prevalent. Travelers should take steps to protect themselves from mosquito bites while outside or sleeping under bed nets when possible. The ministry also recommends that travelers consider getting vaccinated against yellow fever before traveling to certain countries where it is required by law.

The rise in West Nile cases this year is a cause for concern for health officials as it can lead to serious complications such as encephalitis and meningitis in some cases. It’s important for residents of Israel to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions against mosquito bites during peak season.

In conclusion, it’s crucial for residents of Israel to be aware of
