Union Maritime, a UK-based chemical tanker owner and operator, is taking steps to reduce its environmental footprint by equipping its fleet with cutting-edge wind propulsion technology. The company has partnered with BAR Technologies, the provider of WindWings, a rigid sail technology that promises significant fuel savings and CO2 reductions on typical global routes. Each WindWing is expected to save an average of 1.5 tonnes of fuel per day.
As part of its commitment to sustainable practices, Union Maritime has ordered 35 newbuilds from various yards and is seeking a strategic equity investment in BAR Technologies. The company’s goal is to exceed the International Maritime Organization’s greenhouse gas reduction targets by reducing absolute emissions by 20% by 2030 compared to 2008 levels, and sourcing at least 5% of energy from low- or zero-GHG sources by the same year.
Union Maritime’s fleet consists of over 70 vessels, including 52 tankers, 13 dry bulk carriers, and three offshore vessels. Alongside wind propulsion technology, Union Maritime is exploring other green initiatives such as deploying dual-fuel LNG engines on up to 8 LR2s and collaborating with BAR Technologies on the AeroBridge superstructure to enhance efficiency and crew comfort on board. By investing in innovative eco-friendly solutions, Union Maritime is demonstrating its dedication to reducing its environmental footprint and embracing cleaner energy sources.
