100 Years Young: World War II Veteran Celebrates Unforgettable Birthday at Phillies Stadium with Honor Guard, Cake, and Phanatic

I never expected this: Phillie Phanatic surprises World War II veteran on his 100th birthday

Paul Trumbetas, a 100-year-old World War II veteran and avid Philadelphia Phillies fan, had an unforgettable birthday celebration at the Southeastern Veterans’ Center in Spring City, Chester County. The special event was organized after his daughter, Denise Selzer, reached out to the team for a simple favor for her father’s birthday.

Surrounded by military vehicles and the Phillie Phanatic, Trumbetas was honored for his service to the country. As part of the Phillies Salute to Service program, he received a ball from Mickey Morandini that he will throw for the first pitch at a Phillies game. Alongside his wife Barbara and youngest daughter, Fran Griffith, Trumbetas enjoyed the festivities, which included an honor guard, cake, and even an ice cream truck.

Trumbetas expressed his excitement about being surrounded by his family and friends on such a special day. He shared with them a simple message that he hopes will inspire the Phillies on game day – “Keep hitting.” The celebration culminated with Trumbetas reflecting on how grateful he was for the unexpected community support that made his 100th birthday one for the ages.
